Ulrika Jonsson has relieved the agony she endured when she split from her partner shortly after the birth of her daughter Bo.
The former Gladiators host’s relationship with Markus Kempen crumbled shortly after their little girl was born and the broke up shortly after Bo underwent a life-saving heart operation.
Ulrika admits there were “cracks” in the relationship that had started to show before Bo was born, and he accepted a job abroad shortly after the baby arrived.
In her column for The Sun, the telly star wrote: “As I was in hospital struggling to get my baby out, he was outside the labour ward smoking Gauloises cigarettes and plotting his escape.
“After her first operation at six days old, I was allowed to take her home. On the way, in the car, he announced he’d accepted a job abroad and would be leaving imminently.
“I sat in the back of the car, cradling my child – not ours. I knew she was chronically ill, might not survive future cardiac operations — and had just been abandoned by one half of her parents.”
Ulrika goes on to explain Bo is currently away in Greece working as a nanny and by chance her dad happens to be on the same island.
She mulls over the idea of the pair meeting for the first time since Bo, now 21, was just a few weeks old.
The telly star admits her daughter worries a meeting could “open a can of worms” but she fully supports Bo in whatever decision she makes.
She added: “If she wants to meet him, I have always supported her and always will. It has been a discombobulated feeling of hope and fear these past few weeks…
“If he can enrich or enhance her life, who am I to stand in their way? I have never tainted her mind about her biological father.”
Ulrika and Markus never married.
Her first husband was John Turnbull who she wed in 1990. They are parents to a son who was born in 1994. The couple divorced a year later but they remain on good terms.
John is godfather to Bo, who was born six years after he split from Ulrika.
The TV presenter went on to marry Lance Gerrard-Wright in 2003. They welcomed a daughter before divorcing in 2006.
Her third marriage was to Brian Monet in 2008. They had a son together and Brian adopted Bo.
They split in 2019.
