A 14-year-old Ohio girl has died after she disappeared underwater for about a half-hour at an amusement park, authorities said.
Mykiara Jones, a rising freshman at Middletown High School, became submerged after she fell from some sort of jumping apparatus around 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Land of Illusion’s Aqua Adventures Waterpark in Middletown, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, but it wasn’t until about a half-hour later that a park lifeguard was able to locate her in the water, the Dayton Daily News reported.
Jones was airlifted to Dayton Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later, officials said.
A cause of death has yet to be determined, but authorities have launched an investigation.
“This is a tragedy no parent should have to endure,” Sheriff Richard Jones said. “These are the calls first responders dread and have difficulty dealing with.”
Emergency crews have blamed the length of time that it took to locate the teen on the water being like a “pond,” and not clear like a swimming pool, the newspaper reported.
Land of Illusion said it was “saddened to learn of the passing of a young girl” at the park.
“We look forward to supporting and collaborating with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office and other state and local officials as they continue their investigations following the tragedy,” the park wrote on Facebook.
