by Dare Eniola
January 18, 2021

Former Super Eagles player, Christian Obodo has said the Golden Eaglets will make Nigeria proud when they confront Baby Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in the final of the 2021 WAFU Cup at the Stade de Kegue, Lome, Togo.

The two finalists have booked their tickets for the 2021 CAF U17 African Nations Cup in Morocco.

Obodo in a chat with Sports247 from Warri, Delta State said the Eaglets have what it take to win the tournament if they can avoid complacency.

The Delta-born player said having watched their three games since the competition started; he said there is a great improvement in the team which earned them a place in the final.

“Our Eaglets are getting better in each match. I am not surprised that they are in the final because the team have what it takes to win the WAFU Cup. Although the Cote d’ Ivoire is not a pushover I strongly believe that our Eaglets would triumph and make us proud on Wednesday. Their semi-final against Burkina Faso showed that the team have improved in each match and there is no reason why they will not win the cup,” he said.

Meanwhile Obodo made his long-awaited debut for the Super Eagles in the LG Cup tournament in 2003 featuring in the games versus Ghana and Cameroon.

He also made a substitute appearance in the prestigious Brazil friendly playing as a striker. He also appeared in Nigeria’s 4–1 win over Malawi in an ANC 2004 qualifier. Obodo scored his first goal in a 5–2 win at Algeria.

He made six appearances out of 10 in the 2006 World Cup qualification series, scoring a goal.

At the 2006 African Cup of Nations, he featured in four of Nigeria’s six games, scoring in the 2–0 win over Zimbabwe. Obodo last played for the Super Eagles was in 2008.
